The Kansas City Chiefs took the field for the 16th practice of training camp on Tuesday morning as the three-time defending AFC champions continued their preparation for the upcoming season.
Here's a quick rundown of what took place during Tuesday's practice, and for reference, all previous practice reports are below:
1. The Chiefs were back in pads on Tuesday.
Kansas City took the field for the ninth padded practice of training camp on Tuesday, logging the final two-hour and 25-minute practice in St. Joseph. The Chiefs will take the field for a 17th (and final) practice of training camp on Wednesday, but the last practice of camp is historically a lighter session.
In terms of what took place, the Chiefs logged multiple 11-on-11 periods, a 7-on-7 segment and a series of 1-on-1 drills throughout Tuesday's practice. Notably, the defense as a whole was the standout from the session, particularly during an 11-on-11 red zone period in which the defense won the majority of the snaps.
Offensively, wide receiver Hal Presley stood out with multiple catches during 7-on-7 drills.
2. Kansas City signed running back Michael Wiley prior to practice.
The Chiefs, who placed two players on Injured Reserve this week, filled a vacant roster spot on Tuesday by signing running back Michael Wiley.
The 24-year-old Wiley, who spent last season on the Washington Commanders' practice squad, rushed for 1,712 yards and 16 touchdowns in 49 games (24 starts) at the University of Arizona from 2019-23. He was also an accomplished pass-catcher during that time, tallying 123 catches for 1,150 yards and 12 scores.
Here's more on Wiley from Dane Brugler's 2024 draft guide:
"…His short-area burst and vision are translatable traits, and his receiving instincts can be what separates him on an NFL depth chart. He will provide third-down value in the right situation."
Wiley will now have a chance to show what he can do in Kansas City.
3. Linebacker Nick Bolton hauled in an interception during 11-on-11 drills.
Bolton made perhaps the play of the day when he snagged an interception off a deflection during an 11-on-11 period. It was an athletic play by Bolton, who quickly adjusted to the football's altered trajectory and snatched it out of the air. The veteran linebacker later added a pass-breakup in coverage down the sideline as part of a strong day.
Another defensive player who impressed on Tuesday was rookie cornerback Jacobe Covington, who teamed up with fellow rookie cornerback Kevin Knowles to force a pass-breakup during an 11-on-11 period.
4. The Chiefs completed yet another "long drive drill" on Tuesday.
One of the staples of training camp, the Chiefs engaged in yet another "long drive drill" on Tuesday that challenged the first-teamers on both sides of the ball with 14 uninterrupted snaps.
The idea behind the "long drive drill" is to simulate the real-world cadence of playing in a game, and while physically taxing, players have consistently credited it over the years for preparing them for the long grind of a football season.
In terms of standouts during the period, wide receiver Xavier Worthy made an excellent catch while falling backward on the first snap of the drill. Veteran tight end Robert Tonyan logged a noteworthy catch, too, when he hauled in a rocket of a pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes over the middle.
5. Here's a look at Tuesday's injury report.
The Chiefs were without wide receiver Hollywood Brown (ankle), tight end Jake Briningstool (hamstring), cornerback Jaylen Watson (concussion protocol) and offensive tackle Ethan Driskell (recovering from an appendectomy) due to injury on Tuesday.
Next up, the Chiefs will take the field on Wednesday for the 17th and final practice of training camp. For more information on how to reserve tickets, click here.
