Five Observations from Friday's Practice | Chiefs Training Camp 7/25

Here are some quick notes from Friday’s practice

The Kansas City Chiefs took the field for the fourth practice of training camp on Friday morning as the three-time defending AFC champions continued their preparation for the upcoming season.

Here's a quick rundown of what took place during Friday's practice, and for reference, all previous practice reports are below:

7/22 | 7/23 | 7/24

1. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes made the play of the day with a sidearm throw on the run.

Mahomes made perhaps his top play of training camp so far when he zipped an off-balance, sidearm throw into the arms of wide receiver Rashee Rice during an 11-on-11 period.

The play featured Mahomes sprinting to his left and, as he approached the sideline, contorting his body to sling a sidearm pass while airborne into Rice's grasp downfield.

It was an outstanding play and served as yet another reminder of Mahomes' special talent.

Mahomes completed another noteworthy throw earlier in the practice, too, when he fired a sidearm pass into the arms of wide receiver Nikko Remigio during 7-on-7 drills.

2. Rookie safety Major Williams tallied a diving interception during 11-on-11 drills.

Williams, who signed with the Chiefs following a successful tryout at rookie minicamp in May, made one of the defensive plays of the morning with a diving interception deep down the middle of the field during 11-on-11 drills.

The Carson-Newman alum was one of three players to record an interception on the day, joining cornerback Trent McDuffie and fellow rookie tryout signee linebacker Cooper McDonald. McDuffie's pick took place during red zone 7-on-7 drills while McDonald, who played at TCU last year, hauled in a leaping interception near the sideline during an 11-on-11 period.

Another defensive player who stood out on Friday was cornerback Jaylen Watson, who recorded multiple pass-breakups over the course of the practice. Linebacker Drue Tranquill made a noteworthy play as well when he provided tight coverage and ultimately broke up a deep pass way downfield during 11-on-11 drills.

3. Tight end Noah Gray hauled in a deep throw over his shoulder during 7-on-7 drills.

Mahomes dropped a beautiful pass over Gray's shoulder and into his hands during a 7-on-7 portion of Friday's practice as the two players combined for a big play downfield. It was part of a strong day for Mahomes, who also connected with wide receiver Hollywood Brown for a big completion over the middle during the aforementioned 7-on-7 period.

Rookie wide receiver Jalen Royals continued his strong start to training camp, too, with multiple receptions on short crossing patterns over the middle of the field. Royals' strength and fluidity on those sorts of routes has been apparent during his time in St. Joseph already.

Wide receiver Tyquan Thornton, who is off to a great start so far in camp, was responsible for another impressive play as well when he made a tough catch down the sideline before dragging both of his feet in-bounds to complete the play.

Lastly, tight end Robert Tonyan made a one-handed grab deep over the middle of the field during an 11-on-11 period of practice.

4. The Chiefs' competition at punter will be something to watch in the coming weeks.

For the first time in recent memory, the Chiefs entered training camp with multiple punters on the roster in incumbent Matt Araiza and rookie Eddie Czaplicki.

Araiza handled punting duties for the Chiefs in 2024 and showed flashes of what made him such a highly-touted prospect only a few years ago, but Czaplicki – the recipient of the Ray Guy Award in 2024 as the top punter in the FBS – has certainly demonstrated that he belongs as well.

Special Teams Coordinator / Assistant Head Coach Dave Toub spoke about that battle following Friday's practice:

"It's a good competition. I think we have two NFL punters," Toub said. "Matt probably has the edge over these first few days, but I expect – just because it was [all] new for him – for Eddie to [be] better next week. It's a real competition. We're going to take it into the [preseason] games and see who prevails."

5. Here's a look at Friday's injury report.

The only players who didn't participate in Friday's practice were offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor, cornerback Kristian Fulton and tight end Tre Watson. All three players remain on the "Physically Unable to Perform," or "PUP" list and have yet to take the field during camp.

Every other member of the roster was on the field for Friday's session.

Next up, the Chiefs will have a day off from practice on Saturday before taking the field on Sunday for the fifth practice (and first padded session) of training camp. For a look at the training camp schedule or for more information on how to reserve tickets, click here.
