The Kansas City Chiefs took the field for the 15th practice of training camp on Monday morning as the three-time defending AFC champions continued their preparation for the upcoming season.
Here's a quick rundown of what took place during Monday's practice, and for reference, all previous practice reports are below:
1. The Chiefs took part in a lighter, "10-10-10" practice on Monday morning.
The team took the field for a lighter, "10-10-10" practice on Monday as the Chiefs returned from an off day on Sunday.
A "10-10-10" session, which is not padded, consists of what is essentially a circuit of 10 offensive plays, 10 defensive plays and 10 special teams plays. Each segment is of the 11-on-11 variety, but unlike a standard period, the idea is to demonstrate what success looks like for the three respective phases. During the "offensive period," for example," the first-team offense competes against the second or third-team defense in an effort to skew the results toward the offense.
The opposing unit is still encouraged to make plays, but if the concept plays out properly, each segment of the team will experience what success looks like within the given scheme.
The Chiefs completed nearly three full circuits of the "10-10-10" format on Monday with three offensive periods, three defensive periods and two special teams segments.
2. Kansas City signed defensive end Nate Matlack prior to practice.
A new player took the field for Kansas City on Monday as rookie defensive end Nate Matlack joined the roster prior to practice.
Matlack, a native of Olathe who attended Olathe East High School, played at Kansas State (2020-23) before racking up 7.5 tackles-for-loss, five sacks, three pass breakups and a forced fumble in 13 games at the University of Pittsburgh in 2024.
He participated in rookie minicamp with the Chiefs earlier this summer on a tryout basis, and now three months later, he's officially a member of the roster.
3. The offense emphasized the screen game on Monday.
The Chiefs worked on the execution of their screen game during the second "offensive period" of Monday's practice.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes connected with tailback Kareem Hunt, tight end Travis Kelce, wide receiver Rashee Rice, wide receiver Xavier Worthy and tailback Elijah Mitchell as part of the segment.
4. Cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Kristian Fulton each tallied an interception.
The defense focused on the red zone during its second period of practice, which included the opportunity to defend passes and runs in a "goal-to-go" situation. It was a successful period, too, as McDuffie and Fulton each hauled in an interception during the segment.
Another defensive standout from Monday's practice was rookie cornerback Nohl Williams, who recorded a pass-breakup near the sideline during the third "defensive period" of practice.
5. Here's a look at Monday's injury report.
The Chiefs were without wide receiver Hollywood Brown (ankle), tight end Jake Briningstool (hamstring), defensive end Janarius Robinson (foot fracture), cornerback Jaylen Watson (concussion protocol) and offensive tackle Ethan Driskell (recovering from an appendectomy) due to injury on Monday.
Additionally, it was confirmed that safety Deon Bush suffered a ruptured Achillies tendon on Saturday and will require surgery. Bush and Robinson were placed on season-ending Injured Reserve on Monday.
