A member of the Kansas City Chiefs has won the Walter Payton Man of the Year "Charity Challenge" for the fifth time in six seasons as tight end Travis Kelce took home the honor for the second straight year on Wednesday.
Kelce, who also won the challenge in 2020, is the first three-time winner in the program's 11-year history. As part of his victory, Nationwide will award a $35,000 donation to Operation Breakthrough in Kansas City.
Those funds will further add to Kelce's already immense impact on Operation Breakthrough, which provides a safe, loving and educational environment for children in poverty throughout the Kansas City metro. Kelce has contributed nearly $2 million to the organization over the years through a combination of personal donations and various directed funds, spearheading the effort to build the "Ignition Lab" – a hands-on learning center – that has impacted 1,000 students since 2020.
The winner of this year's challenge was determined by a fan vote on social media that ran from December 4 through January 5. All 32 nominees for this year's Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, which will be announced during the NFL Honors ceremony, were eligible for the Charity Challenge.
In addition to Kelce, quarterback Patrick Mahomes (2022), safety Tyrann Mathieu (2021) and safety Eric Berry (2015) also took home the Charity Challenge crown in recent years.
A staple of the Kansas City community both on and off the field, Kelce will now have an opportunity to do even more for his adoptive home courtesy of Nationwide and those who voted.
