KANSAS CITY, Mo. — On Wednesday, Oct. 8, the Kansas City Chiefs announced their Week 6 Coach of the Week recipients for the 2025 season.
Blue Springs South High School Head Coach Alan Wilmes (Missouri) and Washington High School Head Coach Camron Smith (Kansas) are the Chiefs Week 6 selections for their teams' performances in the fifth week of the high school football season. This weekly honor aims to recognize Kansas City-area head coaches for their success on the field and leadership off the field.
As part of their recognition, both coaches will receive a $500 grant from the Hunt Family Foundation, a Chiefs bucket hat, a certificate of recognition and a custom game ball. Both coaches also qualify for the Eric Driskell Coach of the Year Award, which is selected at the end of the high school regular season by a panel from the Missouri and Kansas Boards of the Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association.
Blue Springs South defeated Lee's Summit North on the road 34-7 on Oct. 3. The Jaguars held the Broncos to 137 yards of total offense, including 50 through the air. It was the Jaguars' first win over the Broncos since 2016. Blue Springs South remains undefeated at 6-0 and has not allowed more than a touchdown in its last four matchups. Blue Springs South will be back home for its Oct. 10 matchup against Liberty at 7 p.m.
"This award is a representation of all the hard work our coaches, players, and community do for our program," Wilmes said. "We are lucky to be surrounded by great people who support us and allow the coaching staff to help these young men excel on and off the field. A big thank you to all who support JagNation."
Wilmes, who was named head coach for Blue Springs South in 2022, has a record of 22-16 with the Jaguars. In 18 years of coaching, he's helped lead his teams to a state finals appearance, three semifinal appearances, seven district titles and 10 conference titles. The St. Charles, Missouri, native is now a four-time Chiefs Coach of the Week recipient, previously winning the award in 2024, 2022, and 2021.
Washington remains hot with a 5-0 start after knocking off Atchison 82-44 on Oct. 3. The Wildcats showed off a powerful running attack with 465 yards and eight touchdowns on just 26 carries. Through the air, Washington totaled 206 yards and four touchdowns. The Wildcats are looking to reach 6-0 for the first time since 2004 when they take on Wyandotte at home on Friday.
"My staff and I only had three days to prep for Atchison after a short week because we played on Saturday followed by a gas leak that forced us out of the building on Monday, while Atchison had two weeks," Smith said. "This award validates the effort we put into game planning every week as well as the effort our boys put in to get ready."
Smith is in his sixth season as head coach for his alma mater and is off to his first ever 5-0 start. Since taking over, his teams have brought home a conference title with two hosted playoff games. In his time as a student-athlete at Washington, he was a member of the National Honor Society and ranked ninth in his class while bringing in All-City, All-League, and All-State football honors for his work on the field. This is Smith's third Chiefs Coach of the Week nod, with his most recent in 2023.
Now in its 29th year, The High School Coach of the Week program is a joint initiative between the Kansas City Chiefs and the National Football League. In addition to highlighting head coaches for their team's performance, this award honors individuals who make a difference in the lives of high school student-athletes by preparing them for life beyond football.
