The Chiefs made another addition to their backfield on Monday, signing speedy running back Emari Demercado.
Here are five things to know about the Chiefs' newest offensive weapon.
1. Demercado averaged 6.5 yards-per-carry during his three seasons in Arizona.
An electric playmaker for the Cardinals when given a chance, Demercado averaged 4.9 yards-per-carry in 2023 (58 rushes for 284 yards), 9.3 yards-per-carry in 2024 (24 carries for 223 yards) and 7.1 yards-per-carry in 2025 (44 carries for 312 yards).
That all works out to an average of 6.5 yards-per-carry across 126 career attempts, and on top of that, Demercado added 50 receptions for 324 yards during his time in the desert.
Simply put, when Demercado touched the ball for the Cardinals, he often turned in a productive play.
2. He consistently broke off big plays when on the field.
Demercado tallied just 126 carries during his time with the Cardinals, but when provided with an opportunity, he often made the most of it.
In fact, Demercado ripped off 20 runs of double-digit yardage over his three years in Arizona, doing so on 15.9% of his carries. Demercado doesn't have the carries to qualify on the leaderboard in that category, but if he did, he would top De'Von Achane (15.7%) for the highest "big play" rushing percentage among running backs in the NFL during that span.
3. He's an experienced blocker in pass-protection.
If Demercado is to compete for a third-down role in Kansas City, it's worth pointing out that he has plenty of experience as a pass-protector.
He logged 47 snaps in pass-protection in 2023, 30 snaps in that role in 2024, and 27 snaps in 2025, spending at least 18% of his total snaps each season in pass-protection. In total, Demercado yielded just eight pressures on his 104 pass-blocking snaps for the Cardinals.
For reference, here's an example of Demercado's pass-blocking from the 2024 season:
4. Demercado originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent.
Demercado entered the 2023 Draft as Dane Brugler's No. 34 ranked running back (according to Brugler's pre-draft guide), citing a relative lack of experience at the college level. Brugler was sure to point out, however, that Demercado demonstrated plenty of talent when given a chance:
"He shined when it mattered. He is a run-to-daylight runner who knows how to maximize each touch."
The electric Demercado certainly continued that trend with Arizona, and now he'll aim to do so in Kansas City.
5. He played his college ball at TCU.
Demercado received just two FBS offers out of high school, leading him to begin his career at Saddleback College in California. His lone season there then earned the attention of TCU, where Demercado went on to play five seasons and appear in 51 games (with 8 starts).
The 5-foot-9, 213-pound Demercado racked up 1,615 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns during his time with the Horned Frogs, and despite not hearing his name called during the 2023 NFL Draft, Demercado proceeded to pick right back up where he left off upon joining the Cardinals.
Now, following three impressive seasons in Arizona, Demercado is headed to Kansas City as the Chiefs continue to remake their backfield.
