Five Things to Know About New Chiefs Safety Alohi Gilman

The Chiefs signed Gilman on Thursday

The Kansas City Chiefs added to their secondary on Thursday, signing veteran safety Alohi Gilman.

Here are five things to know about Kansas City's newest defensive back.

1. Gilman appeared in 17 games last year between the Chargers and Ravens.

The 28-year-old Gilman started five games for Los Angeles to begin the 2025 season before being traded to Baltimore, where he went on to start the Ravens' final 12 games. In total, he finished last season with 90 tackles, nine passes defensed, a forced fumble and an interception.

Prior to last year, Gilman spent the first five seasons of his career with Los Angeles, appearing in 68 games (with 34 starts).

2. He's a versatile player with experience lining up all over the secondary.

Gilman has primarily lined up as a free safety during his career, logging 543 snaps at that spot last season. He possesses the versatility to play all over the secondary, however, and he did so in 2025, recording 314 snaps in the box, 106 snaps as a slot corner, 49 snaps on the line of scrimmage and 14 snaps as a wide corner.

His flexible skillset should provide Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo with a valuable chess piece as the Chiefs rework their secondary in 2026.

3. Gilman entered the NFL as a sixth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Gilman's six-year NFL career had humble beginnings as a sixth-round selection in the 2020 Draft, where the Chargers made him the No. 186 overall selection that year.

Despite waiting until Day 3 to hear his name called, however, Gilman ranks 13th in passes defensed (27) and 21st in total tackles (321) among all players in the 2020 class.

4. He played his college ball at Navy and Notre Dame.

A no-star recruit out of high school, Gilman began his career with the Midshipmen before transferring to Notre Dame following his freshman year.

He later went on to star for the Fighting Irish during his two years on campus, tallying 169 tackles, 10 passes defensed, six sacks and three interceptions without missing a start across 26 games.

5. Gilman is a native of Hawaii.

Gilman, whose full first name is Alohilaniokala, was born and raised in the town of Laie on the island of Oahu – the same hometown as fellow Notre Dame star Manti Teo.

He earned all-state honors in 2014 at Kahuku High School, and all these years later, Gilman's journey has led him to Kansas City.
