Chiefs Wrap Rookie Portion of Training Camp Ahead of Veteran Arrival

The Chiefs concluded a three-day “pre-camp” on Monday

The Kansas City Chiefs wrapped up a three-day set of "pre-camp" practices on Monday as the quarterbacks, rookies and select veterans in attendance took part in one final introductory session before the rest of the team arrived later that afternoon.

It was an opportunity for the Chiefs' newest players to get acquainted with the daily grind that is training camp, and despite the sweltering heat, it's clear that Kansas City's rookies took full advantage of the weekend.

"I'm super grateful for these three days," said defensive tackle Peter Woods. "The veterans have a standard for what they want to see from us young guys, so just coming in and being able to have some days to prepare myself to be able to mesh well with the veterans means a lot to me. Not everyone gets a chance to do that."

The weekend's practices represented the Chiefs' first team activities since Mandatory Minicamp wrapped up in late June, and while Kansas City's rookies had already heard plenty about the intensity of Head Coach Andy Reid's training camps, they finally had a chance to experience it for themselves firsthand.

"They definitely were right that this is one of the hardest training camps for sure," said rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen. "[I'm] just getting my feet wet and understanding the playbook and everything, and to just keep going. That's really it."

As for what took place during the three-day "pre-camp" period, here are some quick notes on what stood out:

Saturday, July 25

  • Defensive back Jadon Canady had a strong day with multiple pass-breakups and an interception during 7-on-7 red zone drills.
  • Wide receiver Andrew Armstrong was impressive with multiple catches.
  • Wide receiver Jimmy Holiday hauled in a touchdown in the corner of the end zone during 7-on-7 drills.
  • Safety Xavier Nwankpa tallied an interception during a red zone 7-on-7 period.

Sunday, July 26

  • Wide receiver Omari Evans hauled in a great over the shoulder grab for a touchdown during a 7-on-7 session.
  • Jadon Canady had another strong day with a pass-breakup during 7-on-7 drills.
  • Safety DeShon Singleton tallied a pick on a deep pass during 7-on-7 drills.
  • Wide receiver Cyrus Allen recorded a leaping catch in the end zone during a red zone 7-on-7 portion of practice.

Monday, July 27

  • For a third day in a row, Jadon Canady flashed with a leaping pass deflection during a 7-on-7 segment.
  • Jimmy Holiday was busy with several catches throughout the day, particularly during red zone drills.
  • Cornerback Mansoor Delane logged a pass-breakup in the corner of the end zone during 7-on-7 red zone drills.
  • Cornerback D'Arco Perkins-McAllister tallied a pass-breakup at the goal line during the 7-on-7 red zone period.

The Chiefs will take the field for the first full practice of training camp on Wednesday, although the session is exclusive to Season Ticket Members. Thursday's practice, however, will mark the first of 16 sessions open to the general public.
